Last month the Seoul city government held an exhibition of photos of life in the city during the 1960s, and the gallery it placed online wound up being one of the month’s top-viewed photo sets. My favorite image was this one, of the Han River flooded over.

On the 13th the Jogye-sa temple in Seoul held a ceremony at which young monks-in-training had their heads shaved. One evidently didn’t take it so well.

Turtle ships sail the Cheonggyecheon

On the 28th two replicas of the famous turtle ships led by Admiral Yi Sun-shin were raced in the Cheongyecheon in Seoul. Unfortunately there were no replica invaders to be repelled.

At the Pyongyang Press Center today, the foreign journalists allowed in recently attended a press conference on the North’s failed rocket launch and questioned officials about it. I can only assume that a very awkward time was had by all.

Korean politician rebuked for Dokdo comment

At the entrance to Jangsan Station in Busan on the 10th, members of a Dokdo organization held a demonstration to criticize a local politician for a comment in which he referred to Dokdo as “an internationally disputed area.” That may sound like a mild offense to you, but consider that… actually, I got nothin’.

Environmental groups protest for dolphins in Seoul

Members of several Korean environmental groups gathered in front of the statue of Admiral Yi Sun-shin to call for dolphins being held in captivity in Korea to be released into the wild. A court in Jeju recently ordered the release of dolphins being used in a show there, ruling that the dolphins had been illegally captured.
